Philosophy, Theology and Human Rights in Latin America: an essay on the thinking of Ignacio Ellacuría

This present paper proposes a critical reflection on the role of philosophy and theology in Latin America based on the thought of Ignacio Ellacuría, with an emphasis on his contribution to the defense and promotion of human rights on the continent. Rejecting abstract legal-formal approaches, it argues that human rights must be understood as concrete demands for social justice, political freedom, and material dignity. Based on the notion of the philosophy of historical reality, developed by Ellacuría, it argues that philosophy must assume a role in revealing the structures of historical and epistemic oppression that shape Latin American reality. Similarly, Liberation Theology is presented as a space of resistance and transformation, whose praxis emerges from the lived experiences of popular communities. By critically repositioning these two traditions of knowledge, our proposal is to demonstrate their relevance for the formation of a critical consciousness and the establishment of emancipatory practices in the contemporary Latin American context.
