Senses and meanings of interstate student migration for students at the Federal University of Goiás

Interstate student migration can be characterized as the movement of individuals who reside in certain Brazilian federative units to others with the aim of accessing higher education, whether in public or private higher education institutions. The objective of this text is to discuss the sense and meanings attributed to the migratory process for educational purposes carried out by students at the Federal University of Goiás. It is argued that senses and meanings gain materiality through articulation with the capital acquired throughout life. The production and reproduction of understandings and other issues that act on the incorporated structures and objective structures (Bourdieu, 2020) of these agents are not limited, therefore, to the experiences during student migration, but also to the way in which it was idealized and is being experienced. This study is characterized by a qualitative approach and in its design, field research was used. 17 semi-structured interviews were carried out with students from different federative units and who entered through the Unified Selection System (SiSU) due to some quota or due to broad competition. It is indicated that the initial motivation for migration was passing the course, but the way they evaluate this displacement is particularized by social markers, such as color, class, gender, among others.
