Emotions in a family tour: a study at municipal zoo Quinzinho de Barros (Sorocaba-SP)

In this article, we investigate the emotional dimension of conversations and interactions from seven families groups visits at the municipal zoo park Quinzinho de Barros (Sorocaba – SP), recorded by a GoPro camera carried by one of the kids from each group. The audiovisual data were categorized in the Dedoose software, using a protocol that allowed us to interpret the interactions through the lenses of emotion. The analysis indicated that the visit experience was pleasurable, with predominance of positive valence emotions (excitement, tenderness, curiosity and amusement) or neutral (surprise). On the other hand, the negative valence emotions that predominated were confusion, annoyance, pity and disappointment. Overall, the emotions surpassed the moments of visualization, identifying animals or analyzing their behaviors, even when they bumped into some difficulties doing these activities. Specifically, excitement and amusement stimulated interest, whereas surprise, curiosity, confusion and disappointment manifested a potential to promote the cognitive process and collaborative learning experiences, by breaches of expectations. Tenderness was associated with aesthetic valuation and pity was, mainly, a reaction to death and extinction risk information. Annoyance occurred in specific conflicts within the families.
