methodological notes on artificial intelligence in historical geography

This text is a methodological note on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Historical Geography research, beginning with the contradiction between the water consumption of the Big Techs behind these tools and their application in processing 19th-century sources on droughts in Ceará. We report the initial steps and challenges in developing Python code with ChatGPT and Gemini for the transcription and summarization of the historical newspaper “O Cearense” (1846–1891). We discuss the methodological evolution of the proposal, from the initial difficulties to the robustness of the most recent version, which employs generative AIs trained with customized documents and glossaries for automatic transcriptions, summaries, and reports. As a result, we demonstrate the necessity of adopting these tools to potentialize the analysis of sources, emphasizing the essential role of human supervision to ensure the quality of the results and the ethical aspects of using AI in the academic environment.
