The domestication of Environmental Education

This essay analyzes the influence of sociological functionalism and neoliberal ideology on the discourse of eco-friendly sustainability, which converges on the power of establishing the moral norm of individual responsibility as a personal gesture of care for the environment. The analysis supports the idea that the common sense of Environmental Education – the widespread dissemination of Environmental Awareness – links the educational process exclusively to the Individual removed from Society. This erasure of the societal dimension conceals social conflict, hides the reality of class struggle, and omits the structural dimension of the environmental crisis. It is argued that Environmental Education may be forming virtuous and altruistic Ecological Subjects, imbued with doing their part in the common interest at will; but at the same time, docile and useful, as a result of the Hidden Curriculum of Eco-Friendly Environmental Awareness that flows through the Cultural Industry. The eco-friendly subject is shaped by a Pedagogy of Duties, which reproduces servile obedience to the social norm of good behavior as a mechanism of cultural domination, preventing the unveiling of socio-environmental inequality, nullifying critical and class consciousness, and subtracting the power of an Ecopolitical Collective Subject that fights in the public societal sphere for violated socio-environmental rights. The domestication of Environmental Education is its submission to the symbolic violence of the ruling class against the working classes, which forges docility where there should be rebellion against socio-environmental injustice.
