Abstract
This paper aims at comparing the current and the ideal body image and the degree of satisfaction among women of different economic classes. One hundred women, aged 36,06, ± 12,7, were analysed. CCEB (Brazil Economic Classification Criterion) was used for the sampling of the economic class. To check the body image, STUNKARD e al´s scale of silhouettes was used. Most women identified silhouette 4 as their current one (34%) and silhouette 3 as their ideal one (43%). Eighty six per cent were dissatisfied. The index of satisfaction was 1 in the A2, B1 and B2 economic classes and 2 in the C and D ones. When the economic classes were compared, there was difference between groups A2 and D, B1 and C and between B1 and D in relation to the current silhouette; between A2 and the others as far as the ideal silhouette is concerned and between B1 and D regarding satisfaction. Independently of economic class, the slim beauty pattern is the favourite one among women.
