Do weekly training loads alter hormone concentrations in athletes from the Brazilian under-19 men's volleyball team?

Abstract

Background: We sought to verify the standard of weekly training loads (TL) of the Brazilian under-
19 men's volleyball team, the salivary cortisol and testosterone concentrations and perceived recovery status
(PRS), to understand how these variables respond after one day of recovery, and to observe the correlations
between PRS and salivary cortisol and testosterone concentrations. Methods: PRS, salivary collections for the
analysis of testosterone and cortisol concentrations were performed in 17 athletes (18.3 ± 0.30 years, 87.39 ±
9.02 kg, 198.34 ± 8.13 cm) at the beginning of the first training session (M1), at the end of the last training session
(M2) and one day after the last training session of the week, at the beginning of the session (M3). The session
rating of perceived exertion method (sRPE) monitored TL. Results: The monotony was 2.1 A.U., and weekly TL
was 5712 ± 149 (A.U.). Salivary cortisol concentrations showed significant differences between the moments
evaluated (p = 0.001). There was an increase between M1 and M2 (p = 0.001; ES 1.18) and between M1 and M3
(p = 0.001; ES 1.27). No significant differences were found between M2 and M3 (p = 0.387; ES 0.30). Salivary
testosterone concentrations remained similar between the three moments (p = 0.342), as well as the PRS
(p = 0.298), with effect size insignificant and small between the moments. The PRS showed a positive correlation
with testosterone and did not show correlations with cortisol. Conclusions: We conclude that the training
loads generated significant increases in salivary cortisol concentrations, which remained after one day of recovery,
without alterations in testosterone concentrations and PRS.
