Postural control and kinematics of lower limbs in older adult practitioners of strength exercises

Abstract- Background: One of the main problems faced by older adults for a good quality of life are falls, which are related to aging and reductions in visual acuity, strength and postural control capacity. Objectives: To investigate postural control of strength exercise practitioners and non exercise practitioners in a postural control task with visual disturbance, in order to verify the collaboration of different sensory systems. Methods: Sixteen older women participated in this study (strength exercise: GM = 7; non exercise practiotioners: GNP=9). For the evaluation of postural control, a force plate and an optoelectronic capture system were used, both at 120 Hz. The task performed by the participants consisted to observe three different images related with the participation of the visual system and stay as stable as possible. The data of amplitude, mean velocity, area, DOT, mid-lateral intensity and anteroposterior intensity were processed in three wavebands. Is study was approved by the Ethics Committee on Re-search Involving Humans (CAAE 53867816.5.0000.5231). Results: The results indicated significant differences in mid-lateral intensity variable percentages in the different conditions when compared GM to GNP. For the amplitude of knee and ankle relative angle and the standard deviation in the sagittal plane, there were no significant differences between groups. Conclusion: Thus, it is concluded that strength exercise practice seems to allow older women to be more susceptible to changes in postural control variables among different wavebands related to sensory systems.
