Abstract
The text has as objective to reflect about the origin of physical education and art (art education) in the school, considering the period of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. How these areas are included in the school? When they are called to be part of the educational process? What are the tensions present in this process? Following the reflection of Vago (2002), as was the root these areas at school?

    Doutora em Educação pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas - UNICAMP (2009) e Mestre em Educação pela Universidade Federal de Pernambuco - UFPE (2001). Graduada em Licenciatura em Educação Física e Técnico em Desporto pela Universidade Federal de Pernambuco - UFPE (1992). Atualmente é professora da Universidade Estadual da Paraíba atuando na área de Educação Física, com ênfase em Educação Física Escolar.
