Abstract
The present study aimed to analyze the professional graduation and the tasks of volleyball coaches in the city of São José dos Campos, SP. For this purpose, the literature about the sport, Volleyball and professional preparation in Physical Education was reviewed, by dealing with it in a historical perspective. The theoretical reference applied was Bourdieu (1992). Through the research, depositions were collected from six coaches of this city. The following was detected: they are graduated in Physical Education; they consider that the contents on volleyball taught during the graduation course is insufficient; they think that updating courses are fundamental to them in order to master in the sport; they think that their experience as Volleyball players is more important than their graduation. In conclusion, it shows that the disciplines in graduation need to go deeper about the technical and tactical of this sport, to meet the professional needs of the coaches at the city of São José dos Campos.
