Coastal erosion on the beaches of Copacabana - Leme, south zone of Rio de Janeiro city

Coastal erosion on the shoreline of the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro city is a major challenge in view of ongoing climate change. Urban expansion over the last sixty years has changed the dynamics of sediment transport along this coastal segment. This paper aims to study the behavior of the shoreline over the last years through space-time analysis, involving aerial photographs and satellite images complemented by granulometric data information. Methodological procedures consisted of information from aerial images of Brazilian military collection and remote sensing, involving: images from Maxar Technologies satellites (2002, 2015 and 2024) obtained through Google Earth Pro software. The images were georeferenced and organized into mosaics corresponding to each period in ArcGis 10.6 software. To delimit the position of shoreline, the ArcGIS software and the DSAS tool - Digital Shoreline Analysis System were used, aiming to quantify rates of retreat and sediment deposition in the 60 years interval. The results obtained suggest severe erosion in the area of Posto 6 next to Forte de Copacabana, sedimentological stability in the central segment and deposition on Leme beach. If coastal erosion conditions continue, it is recommended that sediment stocks be replenished as a measure to protect urban infrastructure in the area of Posto 6 on Avenida Atlântica, South Zone of Rio de Janeiro.
