Abstract

The aim of this study was to explore the development of the sports careers of young soccer players. Qualitative semi-structured interviews were employed to examine the sports career development of 30 Brazilian soccer players in different stages of career development (experimentation; specialization; and investment). The interview guide was based on five domains (athletic, psychological, psychosocial, academic, and financial) from a developmental and holistic perspective on athletic career development. Qualitative content analysis of the athletes in the experimentation phase revealed nine higher orders in relation to the four domains. Experimentation athletes showed a preference for soccer over other sports and activities (such as school studies); For athletes in the specialization phase, a preference for playing soccer on the field over other activities was noted; In the transition from specialization to athletic investment, athletes reported having difficulties adapting to the demands of high-performance training and competitions. In conclusion, this research demonstrated the importance of planning sports training that addresses excellence in the subject as a whole, and not just the athletic emphasis, thus preventing developmental problems such as early specialization.
