The influence of port activities on the quality of estuarine waters at the port of Vila do Conde

Seasonal variations in the physical and chemical parameters on water are a environmental issue, as they directly influence the quality and dynamic of aquatic ecosystems. The Port of Vila do Conde, Barcarena/PA, operates on the right margin of the Pará River Estuary (PRE), under a humid equatorial climate with meso tide of up to 3.4 m. This article evaluated the impacts of port activities on the water quality of the PRE using PCA with PAST 4.3 software. Four seasonal sampling campaigns (rainy and dry) were carried out, with collections at 7 points, at flood and ebb tides, according to SMEWW and USEPA. The results indicate concentrations above the limit of CONAMA Resolution No. 357/2005 for the parameters aluminum (0.43 mg/L Al), thermotolerant coliforms (3245.50/100 Ml) in the rainy season, dissolved Oxygen (4.1 mg/L ) in the dry season, and pH (5.50) in the rainy season. High acidity contributed to intensifying the impacts, recommending the modernization of ports and environmental monitoring.
