The deforestation of the Atlantic Forest poses a significant threat to biodiversity conservation. Forest loss alert systems based on satellite imagery have already been adopted as tools for environmental enforcement by government agencies. Thus, the objective of this study was to analyze MapBiomas alerts in an area overseen by a regional office of the Instituto Água e Terra. A total of 52 alerts were issued by the platform between January 2019 and July 2024, accounting for 275.55 hectares of deforested area. The municipality of Sapopema accounted for 38% of the total deforestation. Less than half of the alerts resulted in the issuance of environmental infraction notices during this period. Therefore, this work demonstrates the need for advancement in the use of this geotechnology as a tool for determining the deforested area accurately, to speed up the administrative process and increase the rate of punishment for environmental crimes in the state of Paraná.
