The “Relationship between urban vegetation and the occurrence of dengue fever: case study in Caldas Novas, Goiás”

Abstract

This study investigates the association between dengue occurrence and the spatial distribution of vegetation in the urban area of Caldas Novas, Goiás. The purpose is to provide insights into the role of vegetation in dengue transmission in urban environments, contributing to a better understanding of the factors that affect the spread of the disease. Dengue notification data by neighborhood were obtained from the municipal government for the years 2018 to 2022. Vegetation coverage data for the neighborhoods were estimated using a Random Forest classification model. Regression models were fitted to describe the occurrence of the disease as a function of vegetation coverage. The decrease in vegetation exponentially influences the number of notifications. In neighborhoods with more than 75% vegetation coverage, there was no significant variation in notifications over the studied period.

    Biologist graduated in Biological Sciences from the Faculty of Caldas Novas (2018). Specialist in Clinical and Microbiological Analysis. Master's student in the Postgraduate Program in Conservation of Natural Resources of the Cerrado (CRENAC) at the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology Goiano (IF Goiano). She is currently a public servant in the municipality of Caldas Novas - GO, working in the department of endemic diseases with an emphasis on the control of zoonoses and coordinating the entomology laboratory.

    Agronomist from UFPB, Master in Applied Statistics and Biometrics from UFV, PhD in Statistics and Agricultural Experimentation from ESALQ/USP with exchange at the University of Exeter (Exeter, United Kingdom); Post-Doctorate from Warsaw University of Life Sciences - SGGW (Warsaw, Poland). He is currently a professor at the Instituto Federal Goiano, working mainly in research with statistical models, statistical computing in the software R (e.g. biotools and soilphysics packages), stochastic simulation, quantitative methods in soil physics, spatial distribution and remote sensing of vegetation. Has experience in agronomic data analysis.
